Public Interest Disclosure
The Public Interest Disclosure Act (PIDA) provides “whistleblower” protection for employees in the public sector. PIDA came into effect for school districts on December 1, 2023.
The Act establishes clear procedures for investigating allegations of serious or systemic wrongdoing within public bodies. When wrongdoing is confirmed, PIDA provides the means to address it appropriately. It also protects employees who come forward with concerns from reprisal.
Under PIDA, school districts and other public sector organizations are required to:
-
Receive, investigate, and respond to reports of wrongdoing
-
Provide information and training to employees about their rights and responsibilities under PIDA
